band from trinidad & tobago, led by the internationally renowned lead guitarist guitarist and songwriter michael boothman. tabu and so dey say were recorded in 1972 and would remain family trees only recordings. limited edition of 500 copies worldwide! . family tree represented a new generation re-discovering trinidadian folk music forms and giving them a contemporary treatment. family tree infused old shango rhythms in their new sound and were the first to experiment with steel pan fused with standard instrumentation. tabu is a cover of a cuban standard made popular in trinidad by 1950s calypso musicians cyril diaz and his orchestra and so dey say was an original composition by david boothman. although they only ever recorded these two songs, the band toured with derek walcotts trinidad theatre workshop and forged long standing musical connections with some of the countrys leading musicians.

autonomia, first released only on cd in 1993, was mostly a solo project of simon crab with the aid of christoph fringeli of praxis, recorded after a 2-month tour in the usa and europe. typically bourbonese qualk, this album delivers the opposite of the listeners expectations, breaking the mold set by the two previous albums, my government is my soul and unpop. autonomia sets out in a completely different direction of harsh electronic no compromise techno and has become a classic in the field, making this vinyl release well overdue!

about this release *first 10 tracks only come with the limited edition. nijmegen s eshu welcomes co-founder ivano tetelepta for his first solo release on the label. it is also the imprint s first full length, but tetelepta s second album after the hypnotic drum workout that was true colours, his debut on fear of flying in 2012. it comes as a double vinyl release with the first disc being limited, and finds the producer casting himself free from the dance floor and serving up a beautifully atmospheric soundtrack that would be a perfect companion for a nature documentary. when making eps and 12 s, tetelepta s smooth and infectious drums are always front and centre in his work, whether solo or as producing with label mates under the eshu alias.

for her third outing on the german label jahmoni, marcelle is as inventive and unpredictable as ever. the four tracks on the wittily titled psalm tree ep go from wild techno to abstract dub, and all bear that undefinable marcelle touch of freedom and imagination, which sets the dj/producer so apart from almost all of her younger peers. the ever-travelling dutch lady, who was one of the highlights of this year s nyege nyege music festival in uganda, toys with musical styles and expectations, both live and in the studio she has always deejayed more or less like a musician. this was amongst others recognised by faust founder member hans-joachim irmler, who between 2008 and 2014 released 4 marcelle albums on his klangbad label.

calendar crowd was the duo of alan heaton and terence tiernan who met in their hometown of widnes, cheshire as schoolboys and played together in various bands in the ‘70s. in the ‘80s they formed a 6-piece band called room for humans and recorded one single“telephone telephone / girlfriend”. when the band split and alan and terence continued as calendar crowd in a more experimental direction. their influences were wide reaching: kraftwerk, neu, cabaret voltaire, eno, pil, and joy division.

finnish visual artist and filmmaker hannu karjalainen s music draws inspiration from ambient, drone, modern classical and dream pop. his first album worms in my piano was released in 2007 on osaka records and the second album, hintergarten in 2009 on simon scott s kesh recordings. a handful of dust is a desert, his third album – and the first under his full given name - arrives after a prolonged break.

rumours believes that the only way to harmony is by allowing yourself to be extreme in every way. after listening to megamix for the first time, the origin of the name reveals itself after every track you hear. rumours are hannah vandenbussche and jonas boermans (both active at monami), birds-singer pieter-jan cools and brutus drummer stefanie mannaerts. they joined forces a few years ago to produce something they call sjamaanhop. a self-invented term that best can be defined as an enchanting combination of techno and trip hop. it’s as if the knife and crystal castles suddenly found the ideal pool partners in four tet and nosaj thing. where rumours is known for their dark, fast paced and heartfelt live sets, they show they ve got more to them in their first studio album. influences from every corner creep into the songs, which makes it a quiet unusual, but balanced album. a mishmash of melancholy (every cry for help needs a saving anthem), a certain tint of sadness and that one urgent place in our hearts that we call desire. for the visual aspect of the album, the spanish party island ibiza was an obvious choice for the band. the destination was not only a refuge, it was a place where hope and grief can exist together.

the 4th meters album marked their departure from josie records and was released on the reprise label in 1972. cabbage alley once again proved that the meters were one of the finest, rawest funk groups around. hailing from the soggy streets of new orleans, the meters essentially invented the second line groove, influencing funk music like no other artist (ok, aside from a singer by the name of james brown). these cats are essentially one unified rhythm section, with expertly timed drum breaks, bass driven grooves, bluesy chicken scratch guitars and southern singalong choruses.

formed of laura lee on bass, mark speer on guitar, and donald “dj” johnson on drums, khruangbin’s sounds are rooted in the deepest waters of world music infused with classic soul, dub and psychedelia. their 2015 debut album ‘the universe smiles upon you’ was heavily influenced by 60’s and 70’s thai cassettes the band listened to on their long car journeys to rehearsal in the texan countryside. ‘con todo el mundo’ takes inspiration not just from south east asia but similarly underdiscovered funk and soul of the mediterranean and the middle east, particularly iran.

staub comes back on wax for a third episode. following the no name policy from the parties which started 5 years ago in ://about blank, it is time again for unknown artist to shine. this new ep sees the shy producer appearing on 4 tracks of pristine techno. a1 is an atmospheric trip while a2 is more brutal, on the b side it is going weirder and darker. we think unknown artist tries to craft interesting techno cuts and that he loves variety. that it is the idea behind staub since its beginnings, it does not matter whether you are a newcomer or lady gaga, what matters is the quality of the music. this is what was again aimed with this third record.

white on white is an absorbingly dynamic, multi-layered album of improvisations made on the seminal ppg wave synth, inspired by the work, life and theories of the great, if forgotten, british constructivist artist marlow moss (1889-1958): a radical, gender-bending british jewish lesbian and innovator of non-figurative art who was a then-contemporary influence on piet mondrian, with whom she worked alongside from the late 1920s as part of the abstraction-creation artists association in paris, until the nazi’s forced her from mainland europe back to england, where she settled in the far west of cornwall.

betty wright is a 64 year old american soul and r&b singer and songwriter, who rose to fame in the 1970s with hits such as -clean up woman- and -tonight is the night-. like aretha franklin, betty was blessed with a four octave voice range and is adept at using the whistle register. pressing on 180 gram audiophile vinyl.

drums of passion was the first album released by babatunde olatunji (1927-2003) in 1960. olatunji was a drummer, social activist and musician, born in ajindo, nigeria. in this album he has recaptured some of his early impressions in his drum beats and giving them new zest. the african drum rhythms are not only musical melodies and songs but also ways of communication. for instance, the first track -akiwowo- was the name of a train conductor who shouted his humorous cry against the fading rhythm of the freight train. -baba jinde- is a dance play and the title track -gin-go-lo-ba- was sampled by many contemporary artists (santana and fatboy slim amongst others) and covered in 1979 by latin jazz/percussionist candido for his disco chart smash -jingo-. drums of passion is mainly a danceable album and often cited as one of the first african albums recorded in (then called) stereophonic sound in the united states in 1960. pressing on 180 gram audiophile vinyl.

intergraded is a new label started by midland to focus on releasing music by new artists, whether unknown, emerging or established but working under a new name. the first release sees body in the thames, peach, jay and webstarr help inaugurate the label. the idea for the label came about after being sent unreleased music and ideas by a number of artists over the last year. as i plan to focus graded on my own midland solo work for the foreseeable future, and with regraded occupying a different aesthetic plane altogether, the logical step was to start a new label that could help introduce this music to a wider audience. harry agius aka midland

answer code request’s 2014 debut lp code was an exciting moment for electronic music in berlin – one that offered a break from the eternal hall and monolithic 4/4 kicks that ruled the city’s club landscape. as a hybrid gesture, the album’s spirit recalled an especially fruitful era in the german capital from the mid-90s to early 2000s, when dub and pad- driven detroit techno cross-pollinated with berlin’s industrial aesthetic to create one of the city’s most exciting musical chapters.

intraverso is a journey in that momentary inbetween land that many of us experience sometimes. it explores the turmoil of feelings of when one gets stuck in the middle, floating in between ambition and complete stillness.
fabrizio lapiana is a well-known name on the contemporary italian techno scene. he has been involved in music since the 90’s when he started dj ing in his hometown rome. to date he has over two handfuls of releases on labels such as figure jams, arts and m_rec ltd - as well as his own imprint, the well renowned attic music, founded in 2008.
intraverso is fabrizio’s debut album, set for release on his label. the record is a very personal journey, according to the artist himself. you here find him examining different territory than where he usually heads within his productions. the album, which consists of nine songs in total, was composed between april 2016 and february 2017 in his studio in rome. written in a state of -introspect-, we here see an artist in motion. changing. evolving. the perfect moment to explore something new and unveil a different side of yourself to the world.

following our first release with opal, which aimed at the dance and the bodies, we wanted with this second ep to reach to people’s mind. as a geneva-based techno label, it was fundamental to work with our local hero: opuswerk. he’s already been working outside of the country with artists like francois x and labels such as arts, semantica or dement3d. it was time we involved him in our project. through this ep, opuswerk clearly shows what he knows and does best. much like his dj sets, he connects dots and layers in unexpected ways, like a rhizome connecting different multiplicities. inspiration for the original tracks came from designing systems of independent yet connected sounds, where events are triggered, un-triggered and alter other events, each behaving on their own. as one of those elements, the artist acts as a guide, directing them from one place to the next acting as and with the machines. the -mot d’ordre- is about becoming one of the machines, blending techniques with vibes and catching them like ever escaping dreams. the result is two uniquely sounding spaces, either filled with raw energy like on extensum or with subtle and serene ever-evolving bleeps on spatium. those two extremes are fitting to how we want present the multiple dimensions of our artists works to the world. the same logic went into choosing the remixers, with whom opuswerk had a human connection with. inland and antigone need no introductions, having both established their sound on labels like countercharge or token. each brought their own re-interpretations of the original tracks bringing them closer to the dancefloors.

rebolledo’s you and your hippie friends imprint grows its groove footprint on international dance floors with the full-length debut of gÜero, the latest vinyl outing from the hippie dance sister label and also its first fully fledged album project. to attentive hippie friends, the artist name should ring a big, funky bell – one that sounds exactly like the cut “convertible ride” from the notorious “a very nice combinado volume uno” 12” release (yayhf 01). back then, our hero was travelling under the somewhat more convoluted “el güero fresa” monicker, but has since dropped some of those conceptual pounds in an effort to reach maximum sleekness. in the same vein, his debut album is a testament to ultimate funk-a-ficiency, digging deep into fizzy arpeggios and chunky basslines - and the occasional guitar cameo, giving tracks such as bubbling synth opener elektronique, the neon-lit night cruising, bouncing electro disco roller alto final or the programmatic space drifter just that little extra riff.

surely one of the most famous song that franck produced in his entire career.. the combination between him and mandel turner (naturally born in usa) was explosive the day they created this songin avery naive and uncalculated way .it all started from a beat on a mpc with a minimal hook and a bassline.. franck called his long time friend mandel turner to join him in his studio and explained him that the idea was not to do a classic garage song but to make it in a modern way. the result was to work on a strong chorus without verses etc .that we can found on every classic songs. we gived a demo track to appolonia guys wich were in ibiza starting their new residency at dc10 and it has been played the whole summer and all clubbers in ibiza knew this song and became a underground hit when it came out.. franck asked to his close friends (seuil etc..) and producers to give another interpretation of this song because he knew that his friends loved already this song.. so they gave to this song a new life few month later after the success of the original release. today we got ion one wax different versions of this song for different time to be played and different audiences.

artificial intelligence s second studio album, and first for metalheadz, was released just over 2 years ago, and we re now proud to present the remix package curated by the guys themselves. the ep features remixes from phil:osophy (phil tangent & philth), scar and zero t, with some of the best timeline cuts given a new leash of life for 2018.

the next release from sol asylum was uniquely crafted between julie marghilano and illustrator olga olkaosadzi&#324,,,ska. in this collaborative effort each artist found inspiration in each others work to create and finalize their vision of this release. conjuring beats from the mpc paired with modulated violin and synthesis, julie added a modern twist to the music that originally inspired her to create electronic music. expect the unexpected with the ep titled mercury jasmine and open up your imagination to what flowers would sound like on distant planets.

art alfie enjoyed a successful 2017 as a solo artist. his first project of the year, the ‘reveries of’ lp, released on none other than studio barnhus. this was swiftly followed up by another solo effort on his karlovak imprint he runs alongside mr tophat. both releases garnered plenty of support from across the dj spectrum.

pale blue, the duo of elizabeth wight and mike simonetti, released their debut album too much critical acclaim back in 2015. they come together once again with their latest ep you stopped dying due to drop on crosstown rebels in february. the you stopped dying ep takes influence from shoegaze groups like slowdive and my bloody valentine and moves it to the dance floor. the result is a strange hybrid that some have called technogaze. this would never work if liz wasnt such a strong vocalist. her amazing vocal range makes it easy. mike simonetti pale blue is a hypnotic affair, the driving bass sitting perfectly under wight’s powerful yet ethereal vocals. daughter of babylon takes the record into heavier techno territory with its thudding bass and wights breathy vocals delicately layered over the top. on the flip side love is an unapologetically industrial number with screeching synths that echo around wights vocals. simonetti and wight have each earned their musical stripes in their own rights. simonetti founded the hugely popular italians do it better as well as his own successful record label, 2mr. he’s released a slew of records on highly regarded imprints such as me me me, correspondant and public release, and enjoys a fruitful career as a touring dj, which shows no sign of abating. wight has previously lent her exhilarating vocals to the west coast band, silver hands of which she was once one half

late eighties, early nineties. a back-alley studio in antwerp where new beat and detroit techno lingered. trance was still in the house. electronic body and mind music, fuelled by common sense and primitive artificial intelligence. there was a buzz about wonka. elektrons revolving around atom. humanity firmly on the mappa mundi. labels and sub labels, one-off projects and alter egos, unsung heroes and soon-to-be stars. laurent garnier pushing ludovic navarre to pass on his tapes. all-night light from koenie’s basement. sven van hees entangled in liaisons dangereuses. jan van den bergh before lounge. jan vanneste spreading the news. jan berquin and nicolas rosquin going quadratic. usa import was ready to export its own music. antwerp bio techno. homegrown and uncut. these tracks are evergreens from that place and time.

when alexander (boddika) got in touch asking for some new fresh music i knew it was a really important step for me. nonplus is a stable reference label in the techno scene and it was a unique opportunity. i thought the open minded philosophy of the label would help me a lot and i could create more experimental works. i decided to produce the tracks in almost one take… turned on the synths and looked for the perfect range and character of sounds and spent some weeks recording it, finishing with some edits before the final mixing. the final results were more than expected. harmonic rain, the ep mains track has a really special groove, with a main melody which is transposed and slightly altering it gives me a good feeling. the ep feels to me like a complete journey itself. with peak time tracks, and more experimental and warm up music. loops but not loops. in summary, im really happy with this release and with the beginning of this musical relationship with boddika and the nonplus team.

an enticing taste of the upcoming debut album ‘eventual reality’ by the james l’estraunge orchestra. brainchild of scottish producer ricky reid, pianist on both 6th borough project albums and one half of the soul renegades alongside craig smith, the james l’estraunge orchestra is “the band that never was”, lovingly pieced together from a series of late-night studio sessions with some incredibly talented jazz and classical players. best described as jazz arranged with dance music sensibilities, the james l’estraunge orchestra sound is warm and organic, atmospheric and at times somewhat bleak, a perfect reflection of the remote log cabin in which it was created. immediately iconic both musically and lyrically, ‘closer’ is a powerful commentary on today’s self-regarding, materialistic world with a strong message of hope for a better tomorrow. combining lush, live instrumentation and climactic, cinematic composition, closer’s emotive, almost springsteen-like vocals are performed by ricky reid himself. ‘groovin’ you’ covers a classic from harvey mason: a bass led, heavyweight instrumental jazz-dance workout featuring some impressive brass and woodwind solos bolstered by spine- tingling string swells and tight, rolling drums.

initially released on sonia e. pottinger s highly respected high note records in 1981, sonya spence s sings love lp was relatively overlooked at the time her album came out. sent on her final journey in 2007, the one-woman band leaves us with a legacy of exception. however, time and a small first pressing has made it an object of desire for collectors, deejays and lovers all around the world. and, though it was shamelessly bootlegged throughout history, it is the first that time that this bliss of an lp gets the official reissue treatment on wax, with the love and respect it deserves. beyond classic tracks let the flow on baby, where is the love and the reggae gem fantasy, this 10-tracker abounds with treasures, some of which cannot be found on the internet.

this time y-bayani has support from the great voice of baby naa. baby naa was just hanging out at the studio in accra/ghana when the recordings of rehwe mie enyim took place. the crew was waiting desperately for a singer to back up y-bayani. after an hour of waiting the producer, knowing that she sings at church every sunday, asked baby naa to do the missing part. then something occurred that nobody was expecting and finally everybody was happy that the original singer hadn t made it. rehwe mie enyim is a unique example of how roots-reggae can sound today. maybe it will be the very last recorded real roots-reggae song in human history? on mi sumolo the band of enlightment, reason and love gives us a light and cheerful instrumental every dj must have for his late night wedding set or any other high-class party.

phantasm is a new vinyl label and collaboration between amsterdam s sinchi collective and the much-admired night noise outlet, based in geneva. it kicks off with a strong ep from the soviet union aka richard baldwin, including classy remixes from sinchi themselves and in flagranti. baldwin has a signature style that is cinematic and synth heavy and has been formed over the last decade plus. a fine dj, experienced promoter and self-confessed addict of vintage analogue synthesizers and drum machines, richard pulls his influences from early electronica, 80s film-scores, and shades of techno right up to the present day. this track was first written on a cold evening in december 2010 using a roland tr707 and jx8p synth. after collaborating with his songwriting partner the track was given a haunting vocal and released as the disappearance of becky sharp , while the original remained on baldwin s soundcloud and got id requests from all over the world. 7 years later it comes back to life in the form of its original instrumental, with a 2017 rework, plus remixes by sinchi and in flagranti.

repress 2018 - it is not a secret anymore that manchester has been a deephouse capital city since quite a while. the meandyou. party series is the main spot here with resident djs juniper & arnaldo amongst others spinning alongside their favourite acts like lowtec (whose track on smallville 14 was already a homage called meandyou.dub), jus-ed, dj qu, kassem mosse, move d and the smallville posse. for our catalogue number 30, juniper & arnaldo are delivering four house tracks from outta space, that fit perfectly into the smallville vein. the global village of sweet house music is rising.

the seventh 7-inch in most excellent unlimiteds series of mr. k edits combines a pair of lush midtempo modern soul gems, with both sides textbook candidates for a perfect set-opener. “live in me,” from rufus and chaka khan’s 1979 masterjam lp, was never released as a single, but that didn’t stop it from becoming a fan favorite and warm-up classic for soulful djs. composed and produced by the legendary rod temperton and quincy jones, who were fresh off the completion mj’s off the wall when this was recorded, “live in me” is judiciously extended here by danny krivit without losing any of the graceful magic of the original. philly jazz-funkers pieces of a dream get another respectful krivit extension on the flip side, with their gorgeous “warm weather.” written by maestro dexter wansel and featuring barbara walker on lead vocals, the laid-back pulse of this smooth ‘81rare groove mainstay has never fallen out of favor with djs who understand the power of gentle persuasion.

house heaven on 12-inch. a lofty description, but one that fits most excellent unlimited’s latest offering perfectly. in 1990, boy george and simon rogers (the fall) made a record called “generations of love” for george’s post-culture club project, jesus loves you. legendary nyc dj and producer bruce forest was one of several big names brought in to do a set of remixes, and the better days veteran got to work on several contrasting versions of the cut. the mixes heard here, done at london’s famed olympic studios, are slices of utter ecstasy for anyone who has a taste for ‘90s deep house euphoria and ambient dancefloor excursions, but were unfortunately lost amongst the countless alternate mixes. suffice to say, meu is taking matters into our own hands and has remastered and properly packaged these tracks, directly sourced from forest himself, with the full intention to give this erstwhile dollar-record the respect it deserves. the jazz mix opens with a winding piano solo by andy whitmore (spandau ballet, terence trent d’arby, soul ii soul) that lures the listener into a hypnotic groove that could quite comfortably go on forever but here is constrained by our modesty and the 12-inch format. (a tip for the adventurous dj: flipped to 33rpm the tune becomes an epic balearic chugger, a late-night psylocibic alternative for the heads.) the synth-heavy sounds of the ambient mix on the flip side harken back to the chill-out rooms of the ‘90s but twenty-some years later bring the best kind of vintage charm.

driven by a vicious and visceral soul, the buttshakers are known for their fierce and fiery music. yet after nearly a decade of touring and recording, it was with a different musical vision that they approached sweet rewards, their first collaboration with underdog records. accustomed to the raw, primitive sounds of 60s garage rock and the crude sexuality of premotown soul music, a sound they could have continued to dig into again and again. instead, they decided to take another route: a creative shift, a return to a style of soul music that no longer has to rely on pure energy alone. exceeding the limitations imposed by their tight yet powerful six person lineup, they opened up this studio session to fully accommodate their ideas and concretize their musical ambitions: a larger horn section creates a richer, scintillating sonority, a touch of slide-guitar opens their creative universe to the open spaces of the far west, the organ vacillates between psychedelic drapery and heartfelt gospel tones, all of this supported by the wicked groove of a percussionist driving the beat on. their sultry and soulful frontwoman, ciara thompson, is here for the first time supported by backing vocalist. an occasion for her to indulge in a few call and- response chorales, a reverence to a gospel background instilled in her from her native st louis (missouri), a still vibrant heritage from the city that cradled jazz, blues, country and folk music. ideal for a sound that never lets down yet remains intuitive to the gradual rise of emotion each song demands. with each new listening, sweet rewards reveals something new to the listener: another dimension, a hidden layer.

swiss artist and veteran producer ripperton contacted the esp institute out of the blue mid-2017 to share a gorgeous mix of self-produced material, a collection of pieces made without any agenda outside of representing the self, not geared toward the dancefloor or a specific environment but simply a bi-product of introspective exploration. we were floored, the mix was on constant repeat in our world for weeks, then was subsequently pulled apart into separate titles to form this beautiful double lp, ripperton’s debut with the label. the title sight seeing speaks of someone stepping outside their current reality to look in the mirror, as if to ground themselves and keep sight of who they are in a world of extreme highs and lows. inspired greatly by expansive landscapes and views from airplane windows (imagine your commute flying over the alps every weekend), ripperton describes this collection as postcards to himself, messages from his subconscious recorded on tape (both conceptually and literally), melancholy soundtracks to the mondays that follow weekend journeys. while musical genres tend to cycle through bandwagon moments, the esp institute strives to operate independently of these, and while sight seeing is undoubtably an ambient album, we’re simply proud to revel in the chance moment where an esteemed artist such as ripperton spreads his wings in a beautifully unexpected mode of expression.
